New York
City in 1952, Eight college service organizations came together at a
"constitutional convention" for the purpose of forming a national
service sorority. Los Angeles
City College, Drexel Institute of Technology, New York University,
Queens
College, Boston University, Brooklyn College, University of Houston and
University
of Miami formed the first eight chapters of Gamma Sigma Sigma, National
Service
Sorority. The name Gamma Sigma Sigma was chosen because Girls Service
Sorority,
abbreviated GSS, was commonly used by the individual school
organizations.
Over the last 52 years, Gamma Sigma Sigma has continued to function within the ideals of Service, Friendship, and Equality expanding to nearly 50 schools across the nation, along with several alumni groups. Our membership continues to grow, making Gamma Sig an exciting place for students to get involved with their school and their community. Our open membership policy allows the student to choose us as an organization, thereby giving us a diverse background of talents and abilities to employ. The Zeta Chapter at Drexel Institute of Technology, now Drexel University, is the last of the founding chapter still active.
